The art comes from the mithilanchal region which is Northern Bihar (India) and southern part of Nepal.  This particular painting has been drawn by Mrs Kalpana Devi from Ahila, Darbhanga (India). She is around 60 yrs old and has been drawing since she was a little girl. Mithila painting has been practised in her familiy since 4 generations. This painting depits what is called the Kohbar ghar, which in Maithili means the room where the newly married spends the first night at. Each shape and every figure denote one thing or the other. In this painting, the traditional kohbar ghar motif of the lotus known as the ‘purain’ is centrally placed. This multipetalled lotus has the image of Vishnu holding all his attributes and has Lakshmi lovingly caressing his feet. Even in a limited space, detail has been taken care of to show various intricate cultural details like Blessing the newly married couple that they love each other like the divine couple etc. The sale is for a total of 10 cards with 10 matching envelopes.
