Description
Harry Clarke's colour illustrations for Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen (1916)   A set of 16 blank Greeting Cards showing the suite of colour illustrations for this very rare vintage book     The current offering is for a set of 16 blank Greeting Cards showing the entire suite of colour illustrations produced by Harry Clarke for his first illustrated book - Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen.   Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen was Harry Clarke's first published commission and his colour and monotone work for this title represents a stunning debut as a book illustrator. It includes classic tales from Hans Christian Andersen such as: "The Tinder-Box"; "Great Claus and Little Claus"; "Thumbelina"; "The Travelling Companion"; "The Emperor's New Clothes"; "The Goloshes of Fortune"; "What the old man is always right"; "The Storks"; "The Ugly Duckling"; "The Shepherdess and the Chimney-Sweeper"; "The Fir Tree"; "The Swineherd"; "The Snow Queen"; "The Nightingale"; "The Little Match Girl"; "The Elf-Hill"; "The Old House"; "The Butterfly"; "The Little Sea Maid"; "The Wild Swans"; "The Marsh King's Daughter"; "The Garden of Paradise"; and "What the Moon saw".   The colour illustrations prepared by Clarke are brilliantly loaded with detail, a wonderfully eclectic and rich palate and his characteristic unique line and form. His monotone contributions are similarly masterful.   Copies of Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen - as illustrated by Harry Clarke - in its 1st Edition form are extraordinarily rare and highly sought after and thus, expensive - typically selling for in excess of US$3,000.     The illustrations presented as tipped-in plates with this set of Greeting Cards   The Tinder Box There sat the dog with eyes as big as teacups   Thumbelina She should be Queen of all the Flowers     The Travelling Companion Let him have his head cut off     The Emperor's New Clothes Oh, How well they look! How capitally they fit!     The Hardy Tin Soldier "Tin Soldier!" said the Goblin, "Don't stare at things that don't concern you"   The Storks The Storks   The Shepherdess and the Chimney-Sweeper "Have you really courage to go into the wide World with me?" asked the Chimney-Sweeper     The Swineherd On the grave of the Prince's father there grew a Rose-bush     The Snow Queen Kay and the Snow Queen     The Snow Queen She is fat - she is pretty - she is fed with nut-kernels!   The Nightingale The artificial bird had its place on a silken cushion close to the Emperor's bed     The Elf Hill They danced with shawls that were woven of mist and moonshine     The Little Sea Maid Dancing over the floor as no one had yet danced   The Wild Swans The whole day they flew onward through the air   The Marsh King's Daughter She was once more a beauteous maiden   The Garden of Paradise "Now we will begin our dances!" cried the fairies         These wonderful images are presented on the Greeting Cards as tipped-in plates - in homage to the wonderfully hand-crafted approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.   Using pristine 1st Edition plates held in the Collection as a reference, the images are captured and reproduced through a technique that ensures the colour, line and form of the illustrations originally prepared by Clarke are shown to dazzling effect (it is the same technique utilised for the larger reproduction prints we offer).   Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope.           On the right, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards are presented - using an image appearing in the 1st Edition suite of illustrations by Arthur Rackham for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.   The art of Harry Clarke Harry Clarke (1889-1931) is one of a number of artists contributing to what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Among his contemporaries - on either side of the Atlantic - were artistis including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Warwick Goble, Willy Pogány, Maxfield Parrish and Virginia Sterrett (in Sterret's case, she has been termed 'the female Kay Nielsen').   Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen was his first published work, although he had previously worked on illustrations to accompany Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. That former work had been destroyed in Dublin's devastating 1916 Easter Uprising. A number of commissions followed Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, including his contributions to Tales of Mystery and Imagination - a project that established his stellar reputation as an illustrator.     Spirit of the Ages   We expect that, like us, you will be captivated by the beauty, power and symbolism of these objects.
